Review of Miiro Chocolate Hazelnut Lollies

I have to confess to being a tad excited about the sudden availability of new vegan ice creams that are becoming readily available. My personal mission is of course to try as many as possible. So when I heard about a new company called Miiro that had produced a range of new vegan ice creams I just had to try them. I had planned to try them at the Allergy and Free From Show in London but was just too full to have one. So I ordered some from Ocado. They proved to be very popular as they only flavour left was chocolate hazelnut. So this was the flavour I had to try.

I liked the dark green colour of the packaging with the picture of lolly to the centre. However, I found the rest of the design to be a little to busy for my personal taste. They are clearly labelled as being dairy free, gluten free, and suitable for a vegan diet. Onto the ingredients list hazelnuts are in bold as an allergen. There is also a warning that they are produced in a factory that handles milk and nuts.

On opening the box I was greeted by 3 large sized lollies in the same style packet as the packaging. Which I thought looked worse in a smaller version, sorry. On removing this I discovered a thick chocolate covered lolly. The initial aroma was pretty special an aroma of strong cacao. This aroma intensified slightly on my famous close up sniff test. On biting into the lolly I got a nice crisp crunch from what I can only describe as a very thick chocolate coating. This was followed by the what I can only describe as a disappointment. I was hoping for a smooth ice cream centre. Instead it was slightly crunchy a bit like a naff sorbet where you get those ice crystals but these weren’t present in the lolly. I found it difficult to lick the lolly and had to bite it. Onto the taste the chocolate layer was something special its strong cacao element was rich and indulgent. I certainly got my chocolate hit. However, this was let down by the ice cream centre it seemed to lack flavour. If I was blindfolded I would have never been able to tell it was hazelnut. Perhaps the strong cacao just overpowered this.

So would I recommend these ice cream lollies? No I wouldn’t. The chocolate outside layer of this lolly was something special but the lack of flavour and the non smooth texture of the ice cream inside just let it down. Sorry Miiro but these lollies just weren’t for me.
