Well I managed to pop into a Morrison’s to have a quick peek at their free from range. To be honest I was a tad disappointed as it was smaller than I anticipated and didn’t have a large range of products to choose from. Now this might be a tad unfair as other stores may well have large sections and be well stocked. Anyhow I picked up a few treats to try one of these being their free from raspberry macaroons.

I liked Morrison’s free from branding design. I liked that I could actually see the macaroons that I was about to try. The macaroons are clearly labelled as being gluten, wheat and milk free. They were therefore suitable for dairy free me. The ingredients list highlighted the fact that they contained sulphur dioxide and eggs. There is also a may contain warning for nuts and peanuts.

On opening the packaging the macaroons were contained in two sealed packets containing two macaroons. Inside these packages I could see the three distinct layers of the macaroons, the coconut, jam and pastry. They looked very inviting. On opening one of the packets I was immediately hit by the slightly artificial aroma of the raspberry jam. There was also a subtle undertone of coconut from the topping. On biting into the macaroon I definitely experienced the textures from the three layers. I liked the crumbliness from the coconut topping this was followed by the gooey jam and the dryness from the pastry at the bottom. All three textures worked really well together. Onto the flavour I really liked the subtle coconut topping but sadly this was overpowered by the artificially sweet flavour from the jam. Which I am afraid also had the same effect on the pastry bottom. The pastry itself was nice and was not to hard or dry.

So would I recommend these free from raspberry macaroons if you follow a dairy free and or gluten free diet probably not. I personally found the jam element to be artificially sweet and impacted on the flavour of these macaroons. Sorry Morrison’s but these macaroons were just not for me.
