Following a dairy and lactose free diet I never expected to be able to enjoy a pesto based meal unless it was safe homemade option. The rapid development of the free from market has changed this. If I am honest I had never had pesto before but my other half has enjoyed it in a variety of dishes. So I went on line to Ocado and looked in their freem from section, there were several suitable pestos available. I decided to try a green pesto made by Le conserve della nomma. I am not sure why it just said. Go on try me. This pesto is allergen friendly, it is free from gluten, dairy, soy, nut and egg. It comes in a jar with a picture of the pesto ingredients on the jar and red and white squared border to the edge of the label and on the lid. It has not nurtional information on calories, fat, sugar or salt content noted.

On opening the jar I was hit by the inviting aroma, which was new to me. I could smell the basil with a hint of gralic noted. I had put at a request on Twitter of how to use this sauce. I decided to adapt an idea from FreefromFavourites (a great resourceof recipes if you are dairy and or gluten free). So I cooked the pasta as instructed and at the end warmed prawns in a little lemon and cayene pepper. I then added a couple of teaspoons of the pesto and mixed it into the past before adding the prawns. The pesto sauce itself was slightly thick in consistency with a little oil noted. It was a deep green colour which appeared to be an even mixture of the basil, sunflower seeds and garlic.

My other half couldn’t believe his luck. There was a nice fragrant aroma coming from the pasta from the pesto sauce. It mixed really well with the pasta and a little was all that was needed. It added a new flavour and dimension to pasta that I had not experienced before. On eating the pasta I can taste the subtle of basil and garlic with a very feint oily texture noted I am guessing from the sunflower seeds. It worked perfectly well as part of the recipe I had adapted. I have not had pesto sauce before so can not compare to other brands . I would personally recommend anyone who follows a gluten, dairy, soy, nut, egg free diet give this a try. I am sure you won’t be dissapointed.
