With Wimbledon due to start tomorrow it can only mean one thing strawberries and cream. I thought I would use this as the perfect excuse to try some new dairy free creams. Free From Italy kindly sent me a box of their goodies to try one of which was their new rice cream. So I decided to save it and try it with some strawberries.
I liked the simplicity of the packaging with pictures of whipped cream. I found the labelling not very user friendly. The cream is made in Italy and imported and is translated into several languages. There are no allergens highlighted and no may contain warning. It is labelled as being both dairy and gluten free diet.
Although it is a UHT cream I placed it the fridge so that I could try it chilled with my strawberries. On opening the carton I was expecting a slight creamy aroma I couldn’t really smell anything even on my close up sniff taste. It was a non descript aroma really. On pouring the cream into the bowl it had a slight medium consistency like a slightly thicker single cream. It was a pale cream in colour. On placing a little of the cream on my spoon it remained in place. I really wanted to try this as a whipped cream as well but it does not recommend this on the packaging, I’m not sure why. I personally found this disappointing because of the pictures of the cream on the packaging. On tasting the cream it had a pretty neutral taste with a faint nutty undertone to it. I personally thought both its taste and texture was a cross between a soya and oat cream combined both of which I like. I really enjoyed this crossover element of the flavours and textures. It worked well chilled as part of a dessert. I shall certainly be buying some more to try as a warm savoury dish as it didn’t last me long enough to try this.
So would I recommend this rice cream, yes definitely. So if you follow a dairy free, gluten free or a vegan diet then why not give this rice cream a try. So thank you Free From Italy for producing a nice dairy free cream that I can enjoy.
