I am a girl who loves my cups of earl grey tea. It is my tea of choice and I am always on the lookout for new teas to try. So when I recently popped into Aldi and saw a lone box of their earl grey tea I just had to get it to try. I liked both the colour and design of the purple packaging with a picture of a teapot and teacup to the centre in a pink circle. It is described as a blend of fine teas with a distinctive essence of bergamot. I couldn’t wait to see if it lived up to its inviting description.
Review of Aldi Earl Grey Tea
Onto the ingredients list fair trade black tea (98%), and natural flavourings (2%) are listed. No allergens are highlighted and there is no may contain warning. On a personal note I wish the natural flavouring was in more detail.
Review of Aldi Earl Grey Tea
On opening the box the teabags were in a sealed foil packaging. This is always a positive trying to keep the tea fresh and seal the both flavour and aroma in. On opening the foil packet I was greeted by the teabags. I have to be brutally honest what struck me straight away was just how fine the tea inside the teabags were. I found this a little off-putting.

Review of Aldi Earl Grey Tea
Onto the aroma there was an aroma of what I would describe as being like an every day black tea with a very faint aroma of bergamot intermingled with this. This didn’t change on my close up sniff test. I was a little disappointed by this as I had hoped that the bergamot would be stronger. I placed my teabag in my teacup and added the freshly boiled hot water. I let the tea infuse with the hot water for the recommended brewing time. The tea infused with the hot water and turned to a medium brown colour. But what about the aroma? It predominantly smelt like an everyday black tea with only a very faint hint of the bergamot noted. Very disappointing if I’m honest. On my close up sniff test the bergamot intensified a little but not much. On sipping the tea it tasted like an everyday black tea with only a very faint hint of bergamot noted.
Review of Aldi Earl Grey Tea
So would I recommend this earl grey tea? I’m afraid not. It just seemed to lack any real aroma or flavour. It was like drinking an everyday black tea with a very tiny hint of bergamot thrown in for good luck. I was a little disappointed by this tea. I have tried nicer earl grey teas. Sorry Aldi but this earl grey tea just wasn’t for me.
