Review of Rice Dream Rice Milk

Well my mission to try some new dairy free milks has not been that successful. So I have been trying to make a real effort lately and try some new varieties of dairy free milk. So I headed onto Ocado and searched for dairy free milk. One milk that seemed to grab my attention was Rice Dream rice milk. Now I’ve never tried rice milk before so I decided to give it a try. I liked the blue and green colour to the packaging with a picture of milk cascading to the bottom.

The ingredients list is on the side of the carton with water, rice (14%), calcium, phosphate, stabilizer: gellan gum, sea salt vitamins D and B12 listed. There is no may contain warning. The milk is labelled as being dairy free, gluten free and suitable for vegans.

On opening the carton I was surprised that there was only a faint and subtle rice aroma to the milk. In fact it smelt pretty neutral and did not change on my famous close up sniff test. This was a little disappointing if I am honest as I expected this to be much stronger. It poured easily into a glass and was a light white colour. It was slightly thin and very watery in consistency. On sipping the milk it had a very similar texture to that of water. There was definitely a ricie element which was subtle but not to overpowering. The best way I can describe this is if you don’t quiet drain your rice properly and have a bit of the water on your plate it’s very similar to this with a little sweetness added. I also warmed the milk for 90 seconds in the microwave ready for my famous Weetabix test. It microwaved well and did not separate or form a skin to the top of the milk. Its aroma remained the same I had hoped that the aroma may intensify slightly, but this may be a tad unfair. The milk was absorbed easily by the Weetabix. In fact I needed a higher volume compared to other milks to try to get the Weetabix the way I like them. Sadly, this didn’t happen it was just like I had added water, which I have done previously when I have forgotten to take my milk to work. On tasting the Weetabix it didn’t impact on its flavour. I viewed this as a positive this may sound a little strange but a couple of milks that I have previously tried have made my Weetabix have an artificially slightly sweet flavour. I personally don’t like this and like to my Weetabix to be as plain as possible.

So would I recommend this rice milk? No I wouldn’t its thin consistency and the lack of flavour made it an unappealing milk. So if you follow a dairy free, gluten free or vegan diet perhaps give this milk a miss. Sorry Rice Dream but this really wasn’t to my liking.

Happy Mothers Day


Just a quick post to wish all the mums out there a Happy Mother’s Day. My mum sacristy requested a hand-made cushion as her Mother’s Day present, knowing for well that I can’t sew. So instead I would like to dedicate this post to my wonderful mum. She has always been there for me and encouraged me to work to the best of my ability. She is and always will be the person that I inspire to be. I wouldn’t be blogging if it wasn’t for my mum. She encouraged me to take the plunge into the world of blogging. She attends events as my assistant trying and reviewing her gluten free finds. So thanks mum, you’re simply the best and I am exceedingly lucky to have you😊.
P.S The teacup you got me for my blog is still one of the best gifts I have ever received.

Review of Newburn Bakehouse Gluten Free Crumpets

It can be very difficult to find a dairy free food to have as a light snack. A snack that I do enjoy as an occasional treat is crumpets. They are a quick and easy warm snack that can have a nice topping to add that little extra to tide you over until dinner. Sadly most crumpets contain milk and are therefore not suitable for dairy free me. So when I popped into a local supermarket I headed straight to the free from section to see if there were any I could try. Sure enough I found crumpets by Newburn Bakehouse which are made by Warburtons. They were both gluten free and milk free. So I decided to give them a try for lunch and save the rest later for a snack.

I liked the simple clear packaging to the top allowing you to see the crumpets inside. I also liked the bright orange colour scheme with the blue section clearly highlighting that they are gluten free. Onto the ingredients list egg is highlighted as an allergen and there is no may contain warning. They are also suitable for a vegetarian diet.

On opening the packet I wasn’t really greeted by an aroma and this didn’t change on my close up sniff test. If I’m honest it’s hard to describe the aroma of a crumpet. What I was surprised by was the size of the crumpets. They were monsters much bigger than other crumpets that I have previously tried. I would only need one of these for my lunch. Onto the texture of these crumpets they looked slightly stodgy on the top and crunchy and slightly blackened to the bottom. On touching the crumpet they were springy to touch from the top and firm and slightly hard to touch underneath.

I placed my crumpet in the toaster and toasted it for 2 minutes. The texture of the crumpet hadn’t really changed on touching compared to it untoasted. The aroma hadn’t changed either. I choose to have a little jam on mine as a naughty treat. On biting into the crumpet I initially experienced two different textures. Initially it was light and slightly springy followed by a slight crunch from underneath. On further bites the crumpet was slightly gooey and stodgy in texture. It reminded me of rice that is a little over cooked and goes a little gooey. This wasn’t s negative for me as I quiet like this. On checking the inside of the crumpet the texture was actually quiet similar to this. Onto the flavour it tasted just like a regular crumpet. So that’s a big thumbs up to Newburn Bakehouse.

So would I recommend these crumpets? Yes I would. The larger size is a big bonus as it meant I only needed to eat one. The combinations of the two textures worked really well together. The fact that they taste like a regular crumpet is a big plus. So if you follow a dairy free and or gluten free diet why not give these crumpets a try. So thank you Newburn Bakehouse for making a crumpet that I can enjoy.

New dairy free finds in Morrisions free from range

When I heard that Morrisons had upped their game with regards to their free from products I have to admit to being a tad sceptical. I had never found their free from section inspiring and it seemed to have very little dairy free or should I say milk free options. Like most free from sections it was aimed mainly at the gluten free market. As I was passing a store and needed a few groceries I decided to pop in and investigate to see if indeed their expanded free from section could impress me. Well, I have to admit to be taken by surprise. There was indeed a larger free from section not only filled with well-known free from brands but new Morrisons products. Not only that a lot were also milk free in the sweet treats section as I like to call it. I had to take a double take as I really didn’t expect it. After letting out a little yelp and doing a mini gig on the spot it was time to investigate this section of the supermarket in more detail. I’ve included a snap shot of some of my finds. I have focussed mainly on sweet treats as this is what I personally find more difficult to buy. They are all gluten free, wheat free and milk free.

Oh and yes I may have taken a few treats home with me for my mum and I to try. On packaging my treats the lady at the till explained very proudly that Morrisons now had a larger free from section than Sainsbury’s. So I’m giving a big thumbs up to Morrisons for providing a more extensive free from range that is milk free and suitable for dairy free me. I’m sure it won’t be long before I return to try some more treats.

Review of Tesco’s Snackers

I am always on the lookout for new dairy free savoury treats to try. One thing that I have always fancied is a Ritz style cracker. So when I found out on Twitter that Tesco’s did their own branded version described as lightly salted savoury snacks that were dairy free I just had to give them a try. I popped along to my local Tesco’s to hunt for some packets. I found them difficult to find as I am not used to shopping for this type of item. Finally I found the last two packets. I popped them into my basket and couldn’t wait to get home and try them.

I liked the packaging well I was attracted to the bright orange packaging with mini stacks of the biscuits, very inviting. I just wanted to dive in and give them a try. Onto the ingredients list, wheat and barley are highlighted as allergens. There is no may contain warning and the labelled as being suitable for a vegetarian diet.

On opening the box a faint cheese style aroma was present. I did my usual close up sniff test and this did not change. I wasn’t expecting this aroma so got my other half to check and he agreed. Onto the snacks themselves. They are round in shape with a slightly bumpy edge, with several small holes integrated into each biscuit. On biting into them I initially got an initial crunch followed by a light airy texture from inside the snacks. Onto the flavour this seemed to be slightly cheese like. They reminded me of a weaker less intense flavour that you get from Tesco’s free from cheese flavoured nachos. In fact I preferred these to their nachos and I really like these. I found it hard to only have a few as they are very moorish.

So would I recommend these Snackers? I liked everything about these savoury treats from their combination of textures through to their flavour. I found them to be very addictive I enjoyed most of mine plain. However they worked well with either a piece of ham or pate on top. So if you follow a dairy free or vegetarian diet why not give these Snackers a try. So thank you Tesco’s for producing a savoury treat that I can enjoy.

Review of Marks & Spencer Lightly Sea Salted Hand Cooked Crisps

I quickly popped into marks & Spencer to grab a few essentials. Somehow I found myself drawn to their crisps aisle. Most flavoured crisps are not an option for a dairy free diet. I didn’t have much time so I grabbed a packet of their plain crisps as I thought that these would be a safe option. Sure enough they were so I decided to have them as a little treat as part of my lunch.

I liked the simple red packaging with. The picture of a field to the bottom, potatoes to the top and salt to the right. You knew what you should be getting with these crisps. Onto the ingredients list there are no allergens highlighted on the ingredients list and there is no may contain warning. They are labelled as being suitable for vegetarians.

On opening the packet I was greeted by a fairly strong aroma of salt. This did not change on my famous close up sniff test. What did strike me was how greasy the inside of the packaging looked, a little off putting if I’m honest. The crisps themselves were of a good size and had a good scattering of salt on them. However, they looked very greasy. On picking the crisps up they left a greasy and salty residual on my fingers. Not very nice. On biting into the crisps a nice crunch was noted. As for the flavour well if I am honest was a little saltier than I anticipated. The disappointment continued as the saltines was followed by a greasy residual, not particularly pleasant.

So would I recommend these crisps? No, I wouldn’t. I really didn’t enjoy anything about these crisps. They were too salty and their greasiness just let them down. Sorry Marks & Spencer but I have tried much nicer salted crisps and these just were not for me.

Review of Tesco’s Value Garlic Baguette

Now I am bit partial to garlic bread and make my own as it can be quiet difficult to find ready made garlic bread that is dairy free. So when someone at work suggested that I look at supermarket own brand value bread as these can be dairy free I thought I should take a look. So when I popped in Tesco’s I checked their value garlic bread in the chilled cabinet and sure enough I could have it. After emitting out a little excited yelp I placed it into my shopping basket to give it a try.

I liked the packaging as it is simple like the rest of their value range, with a hint of green noted. You can clearly see the bread inside which I have to say looked very tempting. Onto the ingredients list, wheat is highlighted and there is no may contain warning. It is also labelled as being suitable for a vegan diet, although I personally think that this is not that obvious.

On opening the packet I was immediately hit by a pleasant aroma of garlic with a hint of mixed herbs. This did not change on my famous close up sniff test. I placed the baguette in the oven and cooked the dough it as instructed. Once cooked the aroma of the garlic to intensify slightly and seemed to mask the smell of the mixed herbs. I tore the baguette into a couple of sections and undertook my close up sniff test. At this point I was able to smell a faint undertone of the mixed herbs intermingled with the garlic.

I couldn’t wait to dive into this baguette. It looked nice and crunchy to the outside and light and fluffy inside. On biting into the baguette it was indeed crunchy on the outside (but not too much) and had a lighter fluffy texture inside followed by the slight moistness from the margarine. The texture was perfect, it must have been the way I cooked it. Onto the flavour this the garlic element was definitely the prominent flavour but it was a subtle flavour and wasn’t’ too strong. This was intermingled with a hint of mixed herbs.

So would I recommend this value garlic baguette? Yes I certainly would. I was surprised by its textures and its flavour. They were both spot on. I will no doubt be having many more of these baguettes in the future. So if you follow a dairy free and or vegan diet give this garlic baguette a try I’m sure that you will be pleasantly surprised. So thank you Tesco’s for producing a delicious garlic baguette that I can enjoy.
