Review of The Protein Ball Co New Vegan Flavours

Ok so I am a creature of habit when it comes to my mid-morning snack. I tend to have Nature Valley cereal bars. I like their flavours and find them to be filling. I have tried various other snacks bars but nothing seems to beat my favourite cereal bars. In fact I often sneak them into the bar at the gym to enjoy with a nice cup of tea. So when I visited The Free From Festival in London last year I came across The Protein Ball Company and tried their vegan protein snacks. I was suitably impressed and now enjoy them with a cup of tea at the gym. So when they contacted me and asked if I would like to try their new vegan flavours I of course said yes.

I like the simple design to the packaging, with its cream background and the large log in the centre of a coloured circle to suit the flavour of the snack inside. The top and bottom of the packet is also in the same colour of the circle. To the back of the packaging they are labelled as being gluten free, vegan, and having no soy or dairy. Onto the ingredients list for the raspberry brownies cashews are highlighted as an allergen. There is a warning that the product is made in a factory that handles peanuts, nuts, milk and egg. For the peanut butter and jam peanuts are highlighted as an allergen. There is a warning that the product is made in a factory that handles peanuts, nuts, milk and egg.

On opening the raspberry brownie I was greeted by a slightly sharp berry aroma intermingled with dates. This strengthened slightly on my famous close up sniff test and weakened on smelling an individual ball. The balls were of a good size and were slightly shiny in appearance with intermittent red flecks from the raspberry and the nuts. On touching the ball they were smooth yet firm with slight hard bumps from the nuts. On biting into a ball I liked the texture, it was initially firmer than similar snacks that I have tried followed by a soft slightly gooey texture. As for the flavour it tasted predominantly of dates and cashews with a slight tartness from the raspberry which if I am honest I am not sure I could distinguish as being raspberry. I was a little disappointed as I was expected to taste something similar to a chocolate brownie dessert with a strong raspberry flavour and this just wasn’t the case. I felt that the flavours were put together with good intention but that it just really didn’t work. So would I recommend the raspberry brownie flavour? I am afraid not, I liked the texture but the flavour just let the down. Instead I may try making these no bake chocolate balls as an alternative instead

On opening the peanut butter and jam I was greeted with a peanut butter aroma intermingled with a delightful summer berries. This strengthened slightly on my famous close up sniff test and weakened on smelling an individual ball. The balls were of a good size and were slightly shiny in appearance with intermittent small red flecks and nuts. On touching the ball they were smooth yet firm with a few slight bumps from the nuts. On biting into a ball I liked the texture it was initially firm followed by a soft slightly gooey texture which had a pleasant intermittent crunch from the peanuts. As for the flavour it tasted very similar to peanut butter intermingled with a hint of sweetness from the dates and a slight tartness from the raspberries. Once I had finished a ball I got a slight salty aftertaste which was very similar to what I have experienced when I have eaten chocolate that has contained Himalayan salt. I have to admit by pretty surprised by these balls. I loved the combination of both aroma and textures. The flavour was different to what I had anticipated. I loved everything about the flavour it was like I was eating a peanut butter and jam sandwich with a little piece of salted chocolate for dessert. So would I recommend the peanut butter and jam balls? Definitely I loved everything about these little balls but it was the unexpected combination of flavours that sold me. I shall be putting a request in with my gym to stock this flavour.

  1. Hi Chloe, both flavours of these protein balls sound good, it’s just a shame the raspberry brownie one didn’t live up to expectations.I do like a nice peanut butter and jam sandwich, a hint of chocolate would make it even better!

    xx

  2. I have never heard of these Chloe, until now. I think I would prefer the peanut butter one also. I really should try snacking on something like these rather than the calorific chocolate I enjoy way too much!

    • Hi, they are a fairly new company but growing quickly. The peanut butter ones were certainly at hit with me. I always try to be as honest as possible with all of my reviews.
