Review of Lidl Mince Pies

On a recent trip to Lidl I found myself in their Christmas section. Now, if I’m honest I didn’t expect to find anything suitable for a dairy free diet. I was proved wrong as their own brand mince pies were indeed dairy free. There was only one thing for it accidentally place them in my shopping basket to try later on as a sweet treat.

I liked the simplicity of the white and gold colour of the packaging. To front of the packaging is a picture of the mince pies pies, one of which is open with the mincemeat cascading out. I just wanted to dive in and give them a try. Onto the ingredients list wheat, sodium metabisulphite, sulphur dioxide are barley are highlighted as allergens. There is also a may contain warning for nuts.

On opening the packaging I was greeted by an aroma that I associate with apple pies. I thought that this was little strange as they were mince pies. This did not change on my famous close up sniff test. I was the therefore a little confused as to what I was about to eat. The mince pies are a good size. To the top you have a slightly crunchy burnt looking short crust pastry topped with a little dusting of sugar. This becomes thinner towards the bottom. On checking underneath no soggy bottom was noted. I always check this as I don’t like a soggy bottom. So this was a positive.

On biting into the mince pie I got a slight crunch from the pastry followed by crumbliness then a slight doughiness as I reached the bottom of the pie. To be honest I would rather have a soggy bottom rather than the doughiness that I experienced. Onto the filling there was a good quantity of mincemeat coated in what I would describe as a slightly seasoned syrup. The mincemeat filling was slightly crunchy and worked well with the syrup. Sadly the flavour of the mincemeat filling was quiet bland. The only real flavour that I could distinguish was apple. The other flavours from the rest of the fruit and mixed spice just seemed to be lacking. It was not really the mincemeat flavour that I had hoped for.

So would I recommend these Lidl mince pies if you follow a dairy free diet? I am afraid not I just didn’t enjoy anything about these mince pies from their aroma through to the flavour and texture. Sorry Lidl but these mince pies just weren’t for me.

What a shame! Most supermarket mince pies have butter in them nowadays, so I was quite excited that these are dairy free.

Hi, it was a surprise to find these, but it was indeed a shame. Thanks for stopping by.

    Awww too bad:(
I have a question for you… which Tesco free from product(s) have you liked best? I have a grocery store that just started carrying Tesco but they have no free from products so I thought I’d put in a request:)

    • November 17, 2017 / 5:28 pm

Oh gosh I love their free from cheese style tortilla chips, their microwave puddings, their Christmas mince pies, fromage frais, ice cream lollies ?

      • November 17, 2017 / 6:39 pm

Ok great! I will put in my requests and see what I get!

        • November 17, 2017 / 7:07 pm

  5. November 17, 2017 / 8:26 am

I’ve tried so many naff mince-pies over the years that I now stick to the one I found I love, not bothering to try any other. It must be even harder to find a great dairy free version! x

    • November 17, 2017 / 5:23 pm

Hi, it sure is harder but some of the Free From ones are very nice. Which is your go to mine pie?

“accidentally place them in my shopping basket” haha, story of my life every week! It’s a shame you didn’t really like these mince pies. Sainsburys usually do one with flaky pastry, which I prefer. Great review, very detailed, thank you!

  15. November 17, 2017 / 11:27 pm

Shame you didn’t like them! I’ve never been a fan of mince pies and I always feel a little left out this time of year. Apparently the Caffè Nero vegan ones are fab!

    • November 18, 2017 / 8:43 pm

Hi, yes I think it is fairly common not to like a mince pie. I have heard about the Cafe Nero one and can’t wait to try one.

  17. November 18, 2017 / 7:11 am

They look so yummy, perfect for holidays to save time. I liked that leaf impression on them also. Too bad, they were not up to their quality and did not taste good. Such a disappointment. Anyways, I am a new blogger and I enjoyed linking up with you last week as well on #fabfridaypost. Do check out my second post on cupcakes if you get a chance. Thanks Manisha

    • November 18, 2017 / 8:38 pm

I wish more places did dairy free products, it’s much better now than it was years ago but still there is room for improvement. It’s a shame these didn’t live up to expectations xxx

    • November 18, 2017 / 8:36 pm

    • November 18, 2017 / 8:34 pm

  21. November 18, 2017 / 7:47 pm

    • November 19, 2017 / 4:15 pm

Indeed but they were near the top of the ingredients list so I guess that this could be why.

Ooh dairy free, I know so many who are allergic to milk, so it would be great for them. Shame that the taste wasn’t good though :[

    November 19, 2017 / 10:06 am

Ah it’s hard isn’t it? I used to be dairy free (IBS) and that excitement of finding something you can actually have is like no other. To then have it dashed by the product not being very nice, makes for such a huge disappointment.

    • November 19, 2017 / 4:12 pm

Hi, you have summed up my feelings perfectly. Glad your IBS seems to be better if you can now have dairy. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
