Review of English Tea Shop Earl Grey Tea

I am a girl who loves my cups of earl grey tea. It is my tea of choice and I am always on the lookout for new teas to try. So when I received an English Tea gift box full of a variety of teas I just had to try the earl grey tea first.

I liked the colour of the deep blue packaging with a picture of a teapot with tea leaves and citrus fruit on it and coming out of the spout. Onto the ingredients list organic and fair trade Ceylon black tea (95%), natural flavourings (5%) are listed. No allergens are highlighted and there is no may contain warning. On a personal note I wish the natural flavouring was in more detail.

On opening the package there was an aroma of black tea with bergamot intermingled with this. This didn’t change on my close up sniff test. I was a little disappointed by this as I had expected the bergamot to be stronger. I placed my teabag in my teacup and added the freshly boiled hot water to let the tea infuse with the hot water for the recommended brewing time. The tea infused with the hot water and turned to a medium brown colour. But what about the aroma? It predominantly smelt like a nice Ceylon black tea with only a hint of the tantalizing bergamot noted a little disappointing if I’m honest. On my close up sniff test the bergamot intensified a little but not much. On sipping the tea it tasted like a reasonable quality Ceylon black tea with only a very faint hint of bergamot noted. On a positive note it was light and refreshing and worked well milk free. It might also be suited to those who like a weak strength earl grey tea.

So would I recommend this earl grey tea? I’m afraid not. Yes it was a light and refreshing tea Ceylon black tea that just seemed to lacking the bergamot aroma or flavour. I was a little disappointed by this tea. I have tried nicer earl grey teas. Sorry English Tea Shop but this earl grey tea just wasn’t for me.

Oh that’s too bad! I was gifted with two English Tea Shop teas and have been quite happy with them, though I resisted trying them at first, lol.

Hi, it sure was I have likes some of there other teas just not this one.

      • October 10, 2017 / 9:37 pm

I figured that. I just always find it disappointing when I’m looking forward to a tea and it doesn’t live up to expectations.

        • October 11, 2017 / 8:06 pm

Yes I seem to be getting disappointed a lot lately.

          • October 11, 2017 / 8:17 pm

Oh I hope there’s a good one soon!

I absolutely love earl grey tea and was really excited to see if this is a good one but I know I wouldn’t enjoy it because I like my earl grey to be really strong as I always drink it milk free x

I absolutely love Earl Grey and I usually stick to the same brand. I am always curious and willing to try new brands though. Not this one it seems xx corinne

  4. October 10, 2017 / 6:25 pm

I’m actually not a huge tea drinker, but I’m just beginning to get into it! I’ll give this one a miss as you didn’t recommend it, but what should I try instead?! 🙊

    • October 10, 2017 / 8:13 pm

Gosh thats a tough question, what type of tea are you thinking of, black , green, herbal?

It’s quite disappointing that they didn’t turn out as great as you hoped. I am a big drink tea drinker but earl grey tea isn’t one I usually go for.

  6. October 10, 2017 / 6:36 pm

I wish I liked tea because I always get so jealous of all the different kinds you can get but I am coffee girl through and through. Lovely review though!

Such a shame that this didn’t hit the spot! As you seem like an Earl Grey connoisseur, I’m sure you have discerning tastes! Lucky you to be gifted a box of tea though, I hope the other varieties are more enjoyable!

    Abbey 😘

I like the idea of being a tea connoisseur, yes hopefully the other teas will prove to be better.

  8. October 10, 2017 / 7:47 pm

I am also a lover of many kinds of tea, especially black ones, but i must admit Earl grey was never one of my top favorites. Have you ever tried earl gray with lavender? this combination i loved…

    • October 10, 2017 / 8:07 pm

Hi, I certainly have the combination does indeed work really well together.

  9. October 10, 2017 / 8:32 pm

    • October 10, 2017 / 8:34 pm

It’s an acquired taste but a very popular tea, it sure was a shame.

  10. October 11, 2017 / 8:49 am

I don’t drink black tea but I like that brands herbies. They do an afternoon calm or something that I’m fond of. #FortheloveofBLOG

    • October 11, 2017 / 8:05 pm

Or I’ve not heard of this brand before I shall Google it later.

  11. October 11, 2017 / 8:50 am

That’s a shame! I love a good cup of Earl Grey. My current favourite is Williamson’s Lady Grey which has quite a unique flavour you might enjoy. Thanks for the review. #HumpDayLinky

Earl Grey is probably my favorite choice of teas. That would be a little disappointing if the bergamot flavor was lacking. That’s what I love about Earl Grey. Is there a brand you feel makes the best Earl Grey tea?

    • October 11, 2017 / 8:03 pm

Hi, I’ve had a few great earl grey teas, Blubird tea Co, Sainsbury’s, F&M are just a few.

        October 11, 2017 / 8:04 pm

I don’t think I’ve had any of those. I’ll have to see if they are available in the US

I love Earl Grey tea so it’s such a shame this one didn’t quite live up to expectations. You always want that bergamot to really stand out don’t you? Any recommendations for a good earl grey? X

    • October 15, 2017 / 7:41 pm

  21. October 16, 2017 / 4:41 pm

I’ve never been a fan of earl grey tea! Even if it’s light in taste I don’t think I would lol it had nice packaging though !

    • October 16, 2017 / 4:54 pm

Hi, it can be an acquired taste. Glad that you liked the packaging though.

That’s such a shame that this tea didn’t hit the spot, Earl Grey is my favourite tea too but I agree, it can be a bit hit and miss. My favourite is Twinings, for fragrance and for taste. I’m open to trying new brands but, based on your review, I think I’ll give this one a miss. Thanks for an honest write up!

    • October 20, 2017 / 7:58 pm

Hi, yes I often drink Twinings, I would indeed perhaps give it a miss.

  23. October 16, 2017 / 7:00 pm

It’s a shame that this didn’t quite cut it for you in the end, the pretty packaging made it seem so promising! I’m not a huge fan of earl grey tea myself so I think I’ll stay away from this one…

    • October 20, 2017 / 7:57 pm

Hi, earl grey is quiet an acquired taste.

  24. October 16, 2017 / 7:18 pm

Ah thats such a shame, if it were nice I would’ve gone out and bought it, especially as it’s fair-trade!

    • October 20, 2017 / 7:56 pm

Hopefully I will have some positive tea reviews soon.

  25. October 17, 2017 / 3:56 pm
