Review of Harney & Sons Mint Verbena Tea

One of my favourite caffeine free teas has to be mint tea. I drink it most days as way to reduce my caffeine intake. On a recent trip to America I found it quite difficult to get a cup of tea. So I have to admit being a little surprised when I was offered Harney & Sons mint verbena tea to try after a meal. I of course just had to give it a try. Now the good thing I noticed about being in America was that you tended to get given two packets of tea. This meant one to have after my dinner and one to take home. I liked the packaging of this tea with its light green colour the integrated star pattern to the right. It was larger that the packets of tea you tend to get at home and wanted to open the packet to see what the silken sachet was like inside.

Onto the ingredients list I personally found this to be a tad annoying and disappointing. There are no ingredients listed. It is just described as caffeine free mint with lemon verbena. There were no allergens highlighted and there is no may contain warning.

On opening the foil packaging the packet the silken sachet emitted what I can only describe as a pleasant peppermint aroma. I was expecting maybe a subtle citrus undertone to this tea due to the lemon verbena. This did not change on my famous close up sniff test. I placed the silken sachet into my teacup and added the freshly boiled hot water. The water soon changed to the light brown / greenish colour. It took a couple of minutes for the teas aroma to develop but once it had it was it had it was very pleasant. The mint was the predominant aroma, but faint undertones of grassiness and lemon or citrus became apparent.

On sipping the tea it was apparent that this was slightly different to the many mint teas that I have tried before. My taste buds got hit predominantly by a light refreshing mint which was then intermingled by grassiness and citrus. None of these elements were strong or overpowering. It was almost as if I was get three teas in one, mint, camomile and lemon and ginger (just the lemon element). All three flavours complimented each other perfectly and made for a well rounded light refreshing tea.

Would I recommend this mint tea? Gosh definitely. It is one of the nicest mint teas that I have tried. I liked everything about this tea from its aroma through to its flavour. I am now going to see if I can get this tea in the UK. So thank you Harney & Son for producing a nice peppermint tea that I can enjoy.

Chamomile and mint are probably my least favorite tea flavors but still would give it a try for the citrus side since I don’t drink those kind of teas often! Sounds like an interesting blend!
