I posted blog post earlier this year about my experience of eating breakfast at the Toby Carvery. I was suitably impressed by staff’s knowledge about food allergies / intolerance and the breakfast itself. So I had to return to try out their famous carvery. I checked their online allergen menu ahead of my visit so that I was aware of what choices I could have as part of my lunch. On arrival I explained to the waitress that I was dairy / lactose free. I asked if it was possible to have some carrots and peas cooked separately to have with my carvery. She spoke to the head chef who advised that this was not needed as the peas and carrots did not contain any milk derivatives. On arriving at the carvery I double checked with the head chef what I could eat. He informed me that all of the vegetables had nothing added as he liked keep them simple and fresh. This meant that I was able to help myself to the all of the vegetables except the cauliflower cheese. He also explained that if I wished to have the gravy I needed to choose the vegetarian gravy. He was very helpful and said that if I returned in the future just to come straight to the carvery counter and the chefs would be able to tell me directly what food was safe for me to eat. I of course thanked him for being very helpful. I moved to vegetable section and piled them onto my plate without being to greedy. I finished my lunch with a little gravy and a side serving of apple and cranberry sauce. The sauces were fresh out of the kitchen so I didn’t need to worry about any cross contamination.
I was a little naughty and had a selection of all of the meats from the carvery. This included a little beef, turkey, gammon and pork. All of which were cooked well and hadn’t gone dry which can sometimes happen at a carvery. My favourite meat had to be the turkey. It was nice and moist and was a real treat to have it for a lunch when it is not Christmas. I opted for the regular and black pepper roast potatoes. I have to say I choose these carefully as some were a little to greasy for me. That said they were piping hot slightly crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. I personally preferred the black pepper potatoes. My peas and carrots were cooked just as I liked them, with the carrots being slightly al dente. Sadly the beans were a tad over cooked and a little soggy, but the butternut squash was a real surprise and very tasty. If I am honest I didn’t really like the gravy I found it to be a little to thick. I also found the onion flavouring a little strong and overpowering. I will give this a miss next time as I often have a roast without gravy if I eat out.
So in summary I really enjoyed my meal and was spoilt for choice. The staff were again very knowledgable about food allergies and intolerances. I would certainly recommend this as a place to visit if you want to enjoy a carvery especially if you have a food allergy / intolerance. So thank you Toby Carvery for another enjoyable meal.
